A prompt is a work order.

What is a prompt, really?

By Palace City ·

A prompt is the text you type to tell an AI what you want. That is all it is.

The useful way to think about it: a prompt is a work order.

Picture handing a job to a capable new employee. If you write “fix the thing in the back,” you will get a guess. If you write “replace the cracked tile by the back door, same color as the rest, finish by Friday,” you will get what you wanted.

AI works the same way. The clearer the work order, the better the result.

What a good work order includes

  • The job. What do you want done? “Draft a reply to this customer.”
  • The background. What does the AI need to know? “They asked about a late order. Our delay was a supplier problem.”
  • The standard. What does good look like? “Friendly, two short paragraphs, no excuses.”
  • The limits. What should it avoid? “Do not promise a delivery date.”

You do not need special words or tricks. You need to say what a smart stranger would need to hear to do the job well.

Why prompts matter for a business

When a tool inside your business uses AI, a prompt sits behind it. Someone wrote that work order once, and it runs every time. If it is vague, every result is vague. If it states your pricing rules, your tone, and your limits, the results follow them.

That is a large part of what we do when we build a tool for you: we write a careful work order, then test it on real examples until it behaves.

The short version

A prompt is not magic. It is an instruction. Write it like you would write a work order for a person, and you will get better results.
