What is an AI model?

By Palace City ·

You hear “the model” in every AI conversation. Here is what it means.

An AI model is a new hire who has read a lot but has never worked at your company.

Before the model ever meets you, it has read an enormous amount of text. It picked up how language works, how businesses write, how to explain things, and a great deal about the world. That reading is why it can draft an email or summarize a report in seconds.

What it does not know

It has never worked at your company. It does not know your customers, your prices, your quirks, or what you promised to a client last week. Unless you tell it, it will fill in the gaps with something that sounds reasonable.

That is the main thing to understand about AI at work. The model is capable, but it is new. It needs onboarding.

How you onboard it

You do this in three ways:

  • Instructions. A clear work order for the job.
  • Your materials. The price list, the spec sheets, past examples. The things a new hire would be handed on day one.
  • Supervision. A person checks the work, especially at the start.

A tool built this way behaves much more like a trained employee than a stranger guessing.

Different models, different strengths

There are many models, from different companies. Some are better at writing, some at analysis, some are cheaper or faster. Choosing one is a practical decision: you test it on your real work and see how it does.

The short version

A model is capable and new. Do not expect it to know your business. Teach it, and check its work.
